The death of former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III at the age of 38 was revealed by the team on Wednesday.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and a love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The cause of Barber’s death is unknown at this time.

“Frisco Police responded to a welfare concern at an apartment believed to be leased by Marion Barber,” the Frisco police department said in a statement. “Frisco Police along with the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating an unattended death at the location.”
Barber played in the National Football League from 2005 to 2011, spending his first six seasons with the Cowboys, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2005 draught out of the University of Minnesota.
In 2007, Barber had his best season in the NFL, rushing for 975 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns while adding two more touchdowns via the air to earn Pro Bowl honors.
Barber signed with the Bears at the conclusion of the 2010 season and played his final season in Chicago before announcing his retirement in March 2012.

Barber accumulated 4,780 yards and 53 touchdowns rushing and 1,330 yards and six touchdowns receiving during his seven years in the league.
