According to CCTV, a shallow 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck a sparsely inhabited area in Sichuan province around 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of the provincial capital Chengdu.

As their building began to shake, hundreds of youngsters screamed and hid beneath desks, then dashed out of the classroom with arms over their heads, according to footage obtained by the broadcaster.

Another video shared on social media by state-run broadcaster CGTN claimed to show the initial quake triggering a landslide that destroyed automobiles and strewn boulders and mud across a road.

According to CCTV, authorities in Ya’an dispatched about 4,500 people to the earthquake location, including emergency rescue workers, firefighters, and military police.
The city was “going all out to rescue individuals who have been trapped… and minimise the number of dead to the greatest degree possible,” according to the statement.

Officials were also scrambling to “ensure that no collateral casualties are incurred.”
