Monkeypox status: Over 550 confirmed cases reported from 30 countries, says WHO

According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, investigations are ongoing, but the rapid development of monkeypox in multiple nations at the same time suggests undiscovered transmission for some time.

More than 550 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded from 30 countries that are not endemic to the virus, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, said at a press conference that investigations are ongoing, but that the rapid development of monkeypox in multiple countries at the same time shows there may have been undiscovered transmission for some time.

“To date, the majority of cases have been documented among males who have had sex with men who have presented with symptoms at sexual health clinics. “These communities are working hard to educate their people about the dangers of monkeypox and to prevent the disease from spreading,” Tedros added.

The WHO has advised countries afflicted by monkeypox to expand their surveillance and explore for causes in the larger community, according to Tedros.

“Anyone can contract monkeypox if they come into close personal contact with an infected person,” he noted.

The situation is growing, according to the WHO’s director-general, and the UN’s health agency expects additional cases to be discovered. Monkeypox symptoms usually cure on their own, but it can be severe in some cases, he added.

The WHO had stated a day before that it was unclear whether monkeypox could be totally confined and that the goal is for symptoms to resolve on their own, but that it can be severe in certain cases.

Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Australia, and the United States are among the 30 nations where confirmed cases of monkeypox have been found.

According to the latest reports, the total number of monkeypox cases in Spain and Portugal has surpassed 250, while the number of cases in Italy has grown to 20, with more cases expected in the following days.
