Volunteers in Ukraine are putting their lives on the line to assist heroin addicts.

Volunteers in Ukraine are putting their lives on the line to assist heroin addicts.

Their task has become significantly more risky and challenging for Alexey Kvitkovskiy and other harm reduction volunteers.

Alexey Kvitkovskiy

When Alexey Kvitkovskiy received a call about a man dying in a nearby village, he was already far from home.

Kvitkovskiy evacuated his homeland of Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine after Russia invaded in February; and relocated in Burshtyn, a tiny town 90 kilometres (56 miles) south of Lviv. His family proceeded on to Lithuania, where they were safe from rockets. Kvitkovskiy is not allowed to leave because he is under the age of 60, but even if he were released from military service, he would chose to stay to assist his community.
