Republican lawmakers filed legislation that would make leaking sensitive Supreme Court information a federal felony, on Tuesday.
Rep. Mike Johnson, R-LA, the legislation was introduced on Tuesday, along with twelve other Republican sponsors. The law comes only weeks after a draft Supreme Court judgment was leaked to the public. If approved, the proposal will inflict a jail sentence of up to five years on leakers.

The Court’s institution has harmed, and we must do all we can to attempt to heal it, Johnson said on Tuesday.
Johnson’s measure was introduced only hours after the Supreme Court stepped up its probe into the April leak. It revealed a draft majority decision from Justice Samuel Alito in a Mississippi abortion case. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

As part of the probe, the court’s law clerks are required to give over their phone records and sign affidavits. Each justice employs a staff of one-year legal clerks to assist in opinion preparation.
The inquiry is being handled by Supreme Court Marshall Gail Curley. Since it began in early May, the court has provided no updates on its progress.
