RTA launches third Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport

The 3rd Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2023, a first-of-its-kind event in the field of self-driving transportation, will be held by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Self-driving buses will be the focus of this year’s competition submissions.

RTA will begin accepting registrations for the challenge on Monday, May 30, 2022, at www.sdcongress.com.

The finalists will be announced in October of this year, and the winners will be announced in October of 2023 during the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transportation. Candidates will compete for a total prize pool of US$2.3 million.

The challenge is part of RTA’s continued efforts to promote Dubai’s leadership role in self-driving transportation, as well as its commitment to achieving the Government’s goal of converting 25% of total mobility travels in Dubai to driverless journeys by 2030.

The congress’s third edition features a new competition structure in the realm of self-driving buses. It emphasises RTA’s commitment to leading the Dubai Government’s pioneering initiatives and promoting the usage of autonomous technologies across the board. Leading Companies will receive $2 million in funding, while Local Academia will receive $300,000.

Under the Leading Companies category, any local or international company can submit a proposal as long as it is registered in the country of origin or locally and works in the field of developing or operating self-driving buses. All universities, institutes, and research centres in the UAE that are interested in autonomous technologies research and building associated models are included in the local academia category.
