Thousands of people waving flags Israelis are marching through Muslim parts of East Jerusalem’s Old City; which Palestinians regard as extremely provocative.
Israel was “playing with fire,” according to the Palestinian president. It comes at a time when emotions are at an all-time high, following months of fatal episodes.
The march commemorates Israel’s 1967 wartime takeover of East Jerusalem.
Most countries and Palestinians oppose Israel’s claim to the entire city of Jerusalem as its capital.
Palestinians claim Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, which Israel rejects; and political displays by either side are seen as direct challenges by the other.
