Lester Piggott, the legendary jockey, died at the age of 86, according to his son-in-law.
Piggott rode 4,493 victories throughout an almost 50-year career, the first at the age of 12 at Haydock Park in 1948.
Piggott, a nine-time Derby winner, has been hospitalised in Switzerland.
In 1994, a few weeks before his 59th birthday, he won his final race on the same Merseyside circuit. The next year, he announced his retirement.
Between 1960 and 1982, Piggott won 11 championships as a rider and was inducted into the British Champions Series Hall of Fame last year.
He was deprived of his OBE after serving 366 days of a three-year jail sentence for tax fraud handed down in 1987.
