IHC chief justice grants Fawad Chaudhry, his brother bail

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Athar Minallah has granted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry and his brother Faraz Ahmed bail in a case pertaining to instigating people against the coalition government during the PTI’s Azadi March on May 25.

They were granted bails in exchange for surety bond worth Rs5,000 each.

A case was filed by an SHO of police against Fawad, Faraz and more than 150 other people at the Mangla police station in Jhelum. They were alleged of pelting police personnel with stones. The police officer had also alleged that the participants of the march were carrying arms.

Athar Minallah conducted hearing of the plea for protective bail despite it being an off day.

The court said, “Without touching merits of the case and considering the intention to surrender before the court of competent jurisdiction, the petitioners are admitted to protective bail. The petitioners will be at liberty to deposit cash surety in the light of the policy of this court.”

On May 17, former federal minister for information Fawad Chaudhry had said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had given a historic decision.

He had said that after two months of hearing, the apex court’s decision applied to all the institutions, adding that the Supreme Court had refused to accept loot votes. Fawad had maintained that the looters had been disqualified for life. “Today, the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Punjab have lost their majority,” he had added. Hamza Shahbaz had 171 votes in the provincial government whereas 186 votes were required for showing majority, he had said.
