Former President Donald Trump boasted about the size of the crowd at his rally at the White House Ellipse on January 6, 2018, prior to the violence in which his supporters breached the US Capitol in an attempt to reverse the 2020 election results.
Mr Trump delivered his remarks on Saturday evening in Casper, Wyoming, at a rally in favour of Harriet Hageman, who is running in the Republican congressional primary to unseat Rep. Liz Cheney.
Ms Cheney is the vice chairperson of the select committee examining the raid and was one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach the former president for his role in fueling the unrest.
During the “Stop the Steal” event that preceded the insurgency at the Capitol, the former president boasted about the size of the audience, saying he knew it would be a large throng on 3 January.
“I felt that the crowd was going to be massive, everybody was saying they were going to be there,” he said. “I believe it was the largest crowd I’ve ever spoken before.”
Mr Trump said the press doesn’t want to show the size of the crowd.
“They never want to talk about that crowd,” he said. “I have never spoken, in my opinion before a crowd that big and nobody wants to talk about it from the fake news media.”
The former president also chastised Ms Cheney for propagating myths about the insurgency, labelling it a “hoax.”
“As one of the nation’s leading proponents of the insurrection hoax, Liz Cheney has pushed a grotesquely false, fabricated, hysterical, partisan narrative, and that was the narrative of the day,” he said.
Mr Trump also slammed the fact that many of the alleged rioters are still in prison, referring to them as “political prisoners.”
“You know, you still have a lot of them are still in jail,” he said. “How many people from antifa are still in jail? How many people from Black Lives Matter are still in jail? How many people that have killed people are still in jail?”
