Republican Congressman Mike Garcia attacked progressive Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon on Saturday over a Memorial Day tweet.

“I joined the United States Army when I was 18 years old,” Gascon tweeted. “I’d want to wish everyone a joyous and safe Memorial Day weekend as we recognize and honor those who have served our nation.”

Garcia, who represents California’s 25th congressional district, criticized Gascon’s handling of crimes committed in Los Angeles.

“Are you a spirit?” Garcia, a retired US Navy pilot, reacted. “If not, you’re celebrating the incorrect holiday, @GeorgeGascon.” Veterans Day is celebrated in November. This weekend, we remember those who did not return home. It’s not difficult.

Gascon has been heavily chastised for a policy that prohibits his deputy district attorneys from collecting monetary bail, particularly from families of victims of the recent crime wave in Los Angeles.

Gascon reversed the policy earlier this month.

“After listening to the community, victims, and members of this Office,” a message sent across his office says, “I have decided to grant limited exceptions to the pre-trial release regulation until such a program is implemented.”

The rising displeasure with Gascon has spawned a recall drive that has amassed over 400,000 signatures, with organizers confident that they will meet the required threshold to place a recall vote on the ballot. As of last week, the Recall George Gascon movement had accumulated more than 450,000 signatures. To qualify for the ballot, the group needs to gather 566,857 signatures, or 10% of registered voters, by July 6.

The recall effort is the second attempt, following the failure of the first to collect enough signatures by the deadline.

Furthermore, more than 30 cities in Los Angeles County have voted no confidence in Gascon.
