Nick Kyrgios dubbed fellow tennis player Bernard Tomic “Australia’s most disliked athlete,” reigniting a spat between the two.
They used to be buddies, but they had a falling out years ago, and they’ve been sniping at each other ever since.
Their feud erupted again late Wednesday, with Tomic claiming that he was Kyrgios’ “idol” while they were both rising through the tennis ranks as teenagers.
“He’s always been in my shadow growing up,” said the 29-year-old Tomic, whose game has collapsed in recent years after a series of controversies and is now ranked 418th in the world.
“That’s why any time someone mentions my name to him, it gets under his skin.
“He knows he can’t rewrite history. The records that I set when I was 16, 17, 18, and 19 — youngest Slam quarter-finalist at Wimbledon (in 2011, since Boris Becker), the biggest tournament in the world.”
It came after Kyrgios, 27, told Tomic to “calm down” and boasted that he had “more money, more victories” than his colleague.
On Thursday, Kyrgios, who is ranked 76th, took to Instagram to express more insights.
“HAHA TOMIC let’s not forget the time I paid for your flight home from Shanghai because you had no money,” Kyrgios, whose talent has been undermined by a string of on-court transgressions, said.
“Hahahaha rewrite history, you are the most HATED athlete in Australia. You are right, no one can take over that.”
“Bernard, I didn’t realize it was this awful,” Kyrgios wrote beside a screenshot of Tomic’s latest results.
“Hit me up if you need me to help you remember how to play. Geezus.”
Neither player is competing in the French Open in Paris, but both are planning to compete in Wimbledon next month.
Despite several remarkable achievements, the partnership is usually seen as having fallen short of their full potential, with the pair struggling to maintain their passion and concentrate on tennis.
