Germany’s false doctor is sentenced to life in jail for patient deaths

A German court condemned a woman posing as a doctor to life in prison on Wednesday for causing the deaths of six individuals she treated.

The evidence proved that the 51-year-old woman – whose name was withheld due to German privacy laws – used a falsified licence to acquire employment as an anesthesiologist, according to judges at the regional court in Kassel.

According to the German news agency dpa, the judges ruled that three patients died as a result of treatment errors, while others suffered substantial harm. They found her guilty on three charges of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.

The courts emphasised the exceptional gravity of the offences, making the woman’s release from jail after 15 years more difficult. That is the amount of years someone sentenced to life in Germany must serve before being considered for release.

Prosecutors charged the lady with incorrectly administering anaesthetics and failing to treat blood poisoning at a hospital in Fritzlar, a town near Kassel.

She is also accused of causing hours of oxygen deprivation, as well as harm to the cardiovascular system and organ failure in victims, according to dpa.

Prosecutors alleged the woman acted out of an overwhelming need for notoriety.

From 2015 to 2018, the woman worked at the Fritzlar hospital before moving to a facility in northern Germany.

Disparities in her records were highlighted by officials from a regional medical association, and she eventually reported herself in for employment fraud. Her former workplace and the Hesse Medical Association both reported her.
