Uvalde school shooting: Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz came under fire for claiming he was praying for the people of Uvalde after a mass shooter massacred 19 children and two adults at a state school.
“Heidi & I are fervently lifting up in prayer the children and families in the horrific shooting in Uvalde,” he said. “We are in close contact with local officials, but the precise details are still unfolding. Thank you to heroic law enforcement & first responders for acting so swiftly.”
Mr Cruz made the remarks after a shooter opened fire at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School.
Many, though, pointed out Mr Cruz’s long-standing opposition to gun-control measures. Mr Cruz is scheduled to speak at the National Rifle Association’s Annual Meeting later this week in Houston, where he lives. Republicans Governor Greg Abbott and Senator John Cornyn are also scheduled to speak there this week.
