On Tuesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated Land Commissioner George P Bush in a runoff election, essentially ending the Bush dynasty in a state dominated by the political family.
This is the first time a Bush has lost a statewide primary in Texas in decades. Mr Bush’s grandfather was the late former President George HW Bush, and his uncle is George W Bush, who served twice as Governor of Texas before becoming President of the United States. In addition, he is the son of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.
Despite Mr Bush’s overtures to the former president, Mr Paxton profited from former President Donald Trump’s sponsorship of his candidacy. Mr Bush praised and voted for Mr Trump in 2018, despite the fact that Mr Trump repeatedly chastised his father and said the older Bush favoured immigration reform because he was married to a Mexican lady.
Mr. Bush ran for attorney general against Mr. Paxton, who was facing federal indictment and an FBI probe. Mr Paxton, on the other hand, received backing from Mr Trump’s supporters after he sued four swing states in the Supreme Court in 2020 in an attempt to reverse the 2020 presidential election. Mr Paxton also spoke at the “Stop the Steal” event at the White House Ellipse before last year’s unrest at the US Capitol on January 6th.
