The ‘absence’ an Afghan evacuation strategy is criticised by UK lawmakers

LONDON: The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee stated in a report issued Tuesday that Britain’s exit from Afghanistan was a “disaster and betrayal” hindered by a lack of leadership from top politicians and civil officials.

The Foreign Office was chastised by the committee for having “no plan” for evacuating Afghans who supported the UK operation despite knowing for 18 months that such an evacuation could be required.

This was exacerbated by the lack of clear lines of leadership among political leaders, with choices based on “untraceable and unaccountable political interventions,” according to the committee’s report.

“The fact that the Foreign Office’s senior leaders were on holiday when Kabul fell marks a fundamental lack of seriousness, grip or leadership at a time of national emergency,” concluded the committee.

The report was the result of an eight-month investigation in which the committee heard from 20 witnesses and analysed written information from 36 organisations.
