What Australia’s PM said about Russia-Ukraine War during Quad Meet

Antony Albanese, Australia’s Prime Minister, stated on Tuesday that “strong views” on Russia were voiced during a meeting of the Quad group of countries’ leaders.

The newly inaugurated Australian leader, speaking to reporters after discussions in Tokyo with the leaders of the US, Japan, India, and Australia, and before a leaders’ statement was made, said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “was discussed and you will see reference in the statement.”

“The Russian unilateral, illegal, immoral attack on the people of Ukraine is an outrage, and the atrocities being committed on innocent civilians is something that we couldn’t have expected in the 21st century,” he added, noting he had informed world leaders about Australia’s position.

He stated, “Certainly strong views were expressed in the meeting.”

President Joe Biden told reporters in Tokyo that the United States’ policy of “strategic ambiguity” on Taiwan had not changed, a day after he appeared to push the country’s stance on the island by indicating he would be prepared to use force to defend it.

When asked about Biden’s remarks, Albanese stated that Australia’s policy on Taiwan had not changed.

He stated, “There should be no unilateral change to the status quo.”
