The 117th Mekong River joint patrol was launched on Tuesday by law enforcement officials from China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand.
According to the provincial public security bureau, two Chinese warships left Jingha Port in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China’s Yunnan Province, around 9 a.m.
The four nations will conduct non-contact activities around the river basin during the patrol to ensure safety and stability.
The Mekong River, also known as the Lancang River in China, is an important cross-border shipping route.
Since December 2011, China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand have been conducting cooperative patrols on the river.
