Many of Dave Chappelle’s fans and media observers assumed he was attacked at The Hollywood Bowl earlier this month for the same reason.
In a recent interview, Isaiah Lee, the audience member detained on suspicion of assault after allegedly rushing the stage and charging the comedian, admits that Chappelle’s jokes angered him.
Lee told The New York Post, “I identify as bisexual… and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering.” “I wanted him to know that the next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”
Lee stated he just wanted to have a good time at the Netflix Is a Joke festival, but Chappelle made jokes about his previous material, which included harsh remarks about the LGBTQ community and jokes about homelessness. Lee claims to have been homeless in the past.
He told The Washington Post, “It’s a struggle, and I wanted Dave Chappelle to know it’s not a joke.” Lee has also refuted rumours that he has mental health concerns, while his lawyer informed the Washington Post that he is seeking treatment.
Lee was apprehended swiftly by security and discovered to be carrying a hidden weapon (which he did not attempt to use). He faces four misdemeanour charges, but felony charges have been denied by Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón.
Lee also stated that he had no regrets about his acts.

The stage incident garnered significant condemnation, including from some of Chappelle’s detractors, and the comedian has mostly laughed about it during subsequent appearances. “At least you got smacked by someone of repute!”
At one event, Chappelle stated to fellow comedian Chris Rock, who was slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars in March. “I got smacked by a homeless guy with leaves in his hair.”
Meanwhile, after Chappelle was attacked, Netflix issued the following statement: “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.”
