Simon Yates took off to triumph in stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia in Turin on Saturday, six days after his bad dream on the inclines of the Blockhaus left his title trusts destroyed.
The 29-year-old Briton went it alone on the last drop into the city, winning the stage 15 seconds before Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers), who completed in second and third individually.
That demonstrated enough for Carapaz to take the pink pullover off long-lasting officeholder Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek Segafredo), who had begun the day 12 seconds clear.
Yates had high any desires for bringing home the general championship however a lamentable stage nine successfully governed him out of conflict, and, surprisingly, Saturday’s stage prevail upon left him 18 seconds uncontrolled.
Yates said: “In the last move I enjoyed the benefit of not hustling for GC [general classification] any more yet I came here to win the Giro.
“This is my 6th stage win. It doesn’t compensate for my failure of the time lost on the Blockhaus.
There’s multi week to go yet today was a major exertion – I couldn’t say whether I have something left for the last week.”
Lopez surrendered the pink pullover in the wake of following towards the highest point of the penultimate move, with Carapaz holding onto the drive as he drove various individual competitors with 28km to go.
