According to the country’s official weather office AEMET, parts of Spain witnessed a record heatwave in May, with temperatures reaching 40.3 degrees Celsius (104.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in one location.

The weather service issued high-temperature warnings for 17 Spanish regions on Sunday afternoon.

People in the south of the country “waved fans, drank water, and splashed themselves at fountains” on Saturday, according to Reuters, as a heatwave hit the region.

The city of Jaén in Andalusia, southern Spain, experienced a high of 40.3 degrees Celsius on Friday.
Temperatures in Jaén reached 16 degrees Celsius, according to a tweet from the Spanish weather agency (60.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
