Avalanche reclaim series lead

Colorado Avalanche aren’t satisfied despite regaining the lead in their second-round series.

Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 5-2 in Game 3 on Saturday night to grab a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Artturi Lehkonen scored twice, Darcy Kuemper stopped 29 shots, and the Avalanche took a 2-1 series lead.

Logan O’Connor, Nazem Kadri, and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for the Avalanche, who improved to 3-0 on the road in the playoffs after a 4-1 setback at home two nights prior.

“Of course, it was a good response from the last game,” remarked Lehkonen.

“We know we can still clean up certain things in our game, but we have to go on to the next one.”

For the Blues, who could be without starting goalkeeper Jordan Binnington, Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and an assist, while Colton Parayko also scored.

Binnington made three saves before exiting the game at 6:45 of the first period after Kadri and Blues defenseman Calle Rosen collided in the crease after their skates became tangled.

On the play, no penalty was called.

Blues coach Craig Berube stated, “Look at Kadri’s reputation.”

“That is all I have to say.”

Binnington was being evaluated for a lower-body ailment, according to the coach.

“Really, all I see is a loose puck,” Kadri said.

“I was just sitting behind him, attempting to poke it with my stick. I believe their defensemen connected with me and shoved me against him. I don’t think I would have punched him if that hadn’t been the case.”

While being interviewed on television after the game, Kadri said a Blues player tossed a water bottle at him, which he mistook for Binnington.

In relief, Ville Husso stopped 19 of 23 shots to drop to 1-3 in the playoffs.

When the Blues switched goaltenders, O’Connor noted, “I think there was a little bit of a momentum swing there.”

“I believe we saw our game approaching closer even before that. We got through it early. They were tough on us at first, closing in on us in the defensive zone. Then we started rolling things over a little more, gaining a little more puck confidence.”

St. Louis hosts Game 4 on Monday night.

3:55 into the game, Parayko scored his second postseason goal on a slap shot from the point to put St. Louis up 1-0.

At 11:54, O’Connor tied it up with his first of the series, and Kadri followed with his second, deflecting Cale Makar’s slap shot past Husso just seconds after Pavel Buchnevich finished serving an interfering penalty.

With 2:45 left in the second period, Lehkonen scored his third goal of the playoffs to put Colorado up 3-1.

Nathan MacKinnon contributed an assist on the goal, giving him points in seven consecutive postseason games.

With 29 seconds left in the middle period, O’Reilly knocked in a rebound from Nick Leddy for his sixth goal of the playoffs, pulling St. Louis within one.

In the third period, O’Reilly observed, “I believe we were a little more hoping for a play.”

“We lost our organization a little bit and didn’t have our numbers where we needed them to produce offense. We didn’t make the best push.”

After Husso began skating off the ice for an extra attacker, Landeskog clinched the game with his fifth goal of the postseason with 2:08 remaining.

With Husso withdrawn, Lehkonen scored his second of the night to put Colorado up 5-2 in the last minute.
