Israeli soldier shot and killed a Palestinian teenager during an army operation in Jenin, West Bank, on Saturday, the Palestinian health ministry said.
“A 17-year-old boy was killed and an 18-year-old was critically wounded by the Israeli occupation’s bullets during its aggression on Jenin,” the ministry stated in a statement.
The adolescent was named Amjad al-Fayed by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.
According to the Israeli army, “a number of suspects shot live fire at… soldiers from a passing vehicle” during “operational activity” in Kafr Dan, a village northwest of Jenin.
The statement stated that “The suspects also hurled Molotov cocktails and an explosive device toward the soldiers.”
“The soldiers responded with live fire toward the suspects,” it added. “Hits were identified.”
Fayed was identified as a member and “son” of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which praised him in a statement for assaulting Israeli forces with gunfire and explosive devices.
Armed members of the terrorist organisation carried Fayed’s coffin to his funeral in the Jenin refugee camp.
In statements conveyed by Wafa, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh criticised Fayed’s execution, emphasising that “the international community should hold Israel accountable for its acts.”
The Jenin neighbourhood in the northern West Bank, a hotbed of armed Palestinian factions, has been stormed by Israeli troops many times since a wave of anti-Israeli assaults in late March, with many of the culprits hailing from there.
Both sides have been killed in efforts to track down suspects and skirmishes with Palestinians.
2.9 million Palestinians live alongside 475,000 Israelis in West Bank settlements.
