Taiwan’s WHA candidacy is supported by a Bundestag resolution

On the same day that a delegation of Taiwanese legislators went for Switzerland to advocate for Taiwan on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly, Germany’s Bundestag passed a resolution urging Berlin to push for Taiwan’s participation in WHO operations (WHA).

The resolution, which has bipartisan support, urges the German government to cooperate within the UN’s health agency to campaign for Taiwan’s participation as an observer in the WHA and associated WHO institutions and activities.

It further requests that the government frequently report to the Bundestag on its efforts to facilitate Taiwan’s participation in WHO operations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei stated yesterday that the resolution voted by the Bundestag, which was sponsored by four pro-Taiwan parliamentary factions, was noteworthy.

Taiwan said in a statement that it is looking forward to working with the German administration and parliament to strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to German media, Ulrich Lechte, a spokesperson for the Free Democratic Party (FDP) parliamentary group, Taiwan could play a significant role in the WHO and that its absence due to Chinese pressure must stop.

Along with the Social Democratic Party, the CDU/CSU, and Bundnis 90/Die Grunen, the FDP was one of four party caucuses that cosponsored the resolution.

Taiwan has yet to get an invitation to this year’s World Health Assembly, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from Sunday through Saturday next week.

A group of cross-party legislators went for Geneva yesterday to express Taiwan’s desire to engage in international debates at the 75th World Health Assembly.
