132 pallets of Nestlé Health Science Alfamino Infant and Alfamino Junior formula will depart Ramstein Air Base in Germany this weekend, according to the White House. In the coming days, another 114 pallets of Gerber Good Start Extensive HA formula are planned to arrive. While Biden had asked that the Pentagon fly the formula from Europe to the United States on privately leased planes, the White House stated no commercial flights were available this weekend. Instead, the first batch of formula will be transported by US Air Force jets.
The operation has been nicknamed “Operation Fly Formula” by the Biden administration, which is grappling with statewide shortages of formula, particularly hypoallergenic types, following the shutdown of the country’s largest domestic production factory in February due to safety concerns.
US authorities and the manufacturer, Abbott, are hoping to reopen the Michigan factory next week, but product will not be available for distribution for another two months.
