If the US behaves “logically,” an agreement in Vienna on the resurrection of the 2015 nuclear deal would be possible, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian on Thursday.
According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website, Amir Abdollahian made the statements during a phone discussion with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, calling on the other parties in the Vienna negotiations to put up their ideas to that purpose.
He stated that Tehran is eager to negotiate a “excellent,” “strong,” and “long-term” accord while adhering to the Islamic Republic’s red lines.
The senior diplomat also thanked Russia for its constructive attitude and cooperation for reaching a solution acceptable to Iran.
The Russian foreign minister, for his part, described ties with Tehran as crucial and stated that Moscow would continue to support and work to ensure that a fair agreement is reached in Vienna that protects Iran’s aspirations.
Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal with international powers, including the United States, in 2015. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the agreement in May 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, prompting the latter to abandon some of its nuclear commitments.
Iran and the other JCPOA parties have undertaken multiple rounds of discussions in Vienna to resurrect the agreement since April 2021.
