US does not plan on sending military security to Kyiv embassy

A senior US defense official states that the the US military has no plans to send troops to the US embassy in Kyiv.

It reopened on Wednesday, though this does not rule out the possibility of future deployments.

According to defense officials, the Pentagon will defer to the State Department on embassy security needs, but sending US troops to the US embassy in Ukraine is not ruled out in the future.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has not yet decided whether the US troops should be stationed at the embassy, which was closed ahead of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

“Right now, there’s no US military security component to their embassy security needs. But that is not to say that that couldn’t change over time,” the official said.

“There has not been a specific decision by the secretary one way or the other on this,” he added.

“And he certainly has not expressed an opinion that he does not or never will want to provide any military assistance should it be needed by the State Department.”
