On Wednesday, as Tom Cruise arrived at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in three decades, he was greeted with whoops and hollers from a crowd gathered to catch a sight of the American actor.
Fans outside the palm-lined festival venue chanted, “Tom! Tom!” as the actor emerged from a car wearing a trim blue suit and sunglasses. Some had been camped out with stools and stepladders since morning.
“I was like, ‘I have to see him, no matter what!'” Oriane Holz, 22, recalled. She held up a banner requesting tickets for the festival’s screening of Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to Top Gun.
Katy McNulty, 46, and Joanne Routledge, 52, had been driving since the early hours of the morning. The couple got up at 3 a.m. and drove from the north of England to Scotland, flying from Edinburgh to Nice and then catching a train to Cannes in time for Tom Cruise’s appearance.
