Pilou Asbaek of “Game of Thrones” stars in the Danish WWII drama ‘Befrielsen’

Pilou Asbaek, who starred in Game of Thrones and Borgen, will next be seen in Anders Walter’s Danish historical drama Befrielsen.

The drama is set in 1945, just after Denmark was liberated from Nazi rule, and is being pitched to buyers at the Cannes Film Market by TrustNordisk. Approximately 250,000 German refugees who arrived in Denmark just before the liberation are interned, including one in a nearby high school. Asbk portrays the school headmaster, who must decide whether to encourage the Danes’ anti-German prejudice or try to aid the refugees with his wife and children.

The Danish title of the film loosely translates to “freedom,” however there is no official English title yet.

Miriam Nrgaard, Mette Hst Hansen, and Tomas Radoor produced the film for Nordisk Film in association with Growing Studios, and Walter penned the story for Befrielsen. The film, which has a budget of $4.3 million (€4.1 million), has wrapped production and will be released on September 23, 2023 in the United States.

The picture will be sold at Cannes based on the actors and an English-language script, and TrustNordisk plans to show footage to buyers at the AFM later this year.

I Kill Giants, Walter’s feature debut, opened at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017, while his 2013 short Helium received the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short.
