Lebanon reformist MPs examine their options following the election surge

Following electoral wins that give them major weight in the legislative balance of power, newly elected reformist MPs in Lebanon are contemplating measures.

Thirteen reformist MPs from Lebanon, who ran on the ideals of the 2019 anti-establishment revolt, as well as 21 independent MPs, have been elected to the newly elected Lebanese Parliament.

Analysts calculated the size of the parliamentary blocs, which are classified into sovereign blocs and pro-Hezbollah groups.

Figures demonstrate that elected members of the 128-member Parliament may be positioned among 13 blocs separated into two opposing bigger groupings.

The prior positions of the sovereign MPs can be used to classify them. Hezbollah has the support of 68 MPs. They include Lebanese Forces Party, Progressive Socialist Party, Islamic Group, and Lebanese Phalanges Party members, as well as independents and reformists.

Meanwhile, the pro-Hezbollah side includes the party, the Amal Movement, the Free Patriotic Movement, the Marada Movement, the Tashnaq Party, and Al-Ahbash, totaling around 60 MPs.

There is a lot of conjecture about how the new independent MPs will handle impending events and how they will place themselves on the political landscape.

Major challenges await the newly elected house, the first of which is electing a speaker and a deputy speaker, followed by parliamentary consultations to assign someone to form a new government, then electing a new president in September or October after Michel Aoun’s term ends.

There are also significant legislative obligations, within the framework of reforms required by the international community to extricate Lebanon from its worsening economic crisis.
