After 78 years of mass deportation, Russia is repeating Soviet policy toward Crimean Tatars

Today, 78 years after the Soviet authorities forcibly deported the Crimean Tatars, history is repeating itself as the country continues to struggle to live peacefully in its homeland.

According to reports, British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons believes this.

She recounted that the whole Crimean Tatar population was forcibly exiled from their motherland in Crimea 78 years ago.

“Today, history is repeating itself as Crimean Tatars continue to face repression, deportation, and the erosion of their culture and identity in their ancient homeland,” the envoy tweeted.

“We remember the thousands of innocent people who died or suffered terribly as a result of Soviet activities,” Simmons said.

As previously reported, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Crimean Tatar mass expulsion on May 18 and supports efforts to defend the Crimean Tatar nation’s rights.
