Ukrainians are waiting for word about the fighters who abandoned the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol earlier this week; they surrendered to Russian soldiers after weeks of being trapped under fire.

Despite Moscow’s description, Ukrainian officials have refrained from stating the fighters; the final pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the city, had surrendered.
“They battled till the end and, regrettably, they no longer had any chance,” Tetyana Kolesnikova, a Mariupol resident who left the city in mid-April, said in a message on the Telegram messaging app from Riga, Latvia, where she went after first fleeing to Russia from Mariupol.
