Police in Telangana, India, rescued a 12-year-old girl who was getting married to a 35-year-old man on Monday, according to Hindustan Times.

Her parents were marrying off the minor.

The incident occurred in the girl’s village of Velicharla, Kesampet block, around 50 kilometres outside of Hyderabad.

“With the support of local employees and other villagers, the girl, who has no formal schooling, filed a complaint with us (the police) this morning.” “Praveen Kumar, a police sub-inspector in Keshampet, stated.

“He said, “She informed us that her parents took her to her cousin’s house claiming to attend a family function, where she was forced to marry an older guy.”

He also stated that the child did not appear to be psychologically stable because she had answered questions incoherently.

The groom had abducted the daughter and married her, according to the parents, who refuted the charges.

The police have filed a case against the 35-year-old under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offices (POCSO) Act, according to Kumar.

The 12-year-old was handed over to the officials of the Integrated Child Development Society (ICDS).

The girl told the authorities during her counselling sessions that she was being forced married to her distant cousin, according to the ICDS supervisor.
