After a court last week extended Brittney Griner’s pre-trial imprisonment for another month; Secretary of State Antony Blinken reached out to her wife, who is the American basketball player imprisoned in Russia.

According to a senior State Department official, Blinken met with Cherelle Griner on Saturday; this was to reassure her that her wife’s issue is a top concern for him. Blinken also advised Cherelle Griner that she may call him if she didn’t get something from his team.
Griner, a standout centre for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, was arrested on drug charges; after Russian police said that a search of her luggage at a Moscow-area airport turned up vape cartridges with cannabis-derived oil. Griner, 31, also plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia.
