On Monday, European Union foreign ministers attempted to publicly persuade Hungary to lift its veto on a proposed oil embargo against Russia; with Lithuania claiming the bloc was being “kept hostage by one member state.”

After Moscow’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, the European Commission recommended an oil embargo in early May; which contains carve-outs for E.U. states most dependent on Russian energy.
Germany, the largest economy in the European Union and a major importer of Russian energy; said it wants a deal to authorise the oil embargo, which could last for years.
