Joining NATO will not help Europe’s security, according to Peskov

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia has no territorial disputes with Finland or Sweden; and their membership in NATO will not increase or improve Europe’s security.

Peskov told reporters during his regular phone briefing that Moscow was “very closely” monitoring Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership aspirations, calling it “an subject that concerns us.”

Peskov’s remarks come after Sweden and Finland announced over the weekend that they will apply for NATO membership. The Swedish and Finnish parliaments were both debating their respective applications on Monday.

The Kremlin responded angrily to Finland’s announcement of its intention to join NATO, threatening retaliation.
