The Scotus leak has had little effect on which party Americans desire to rule Congress.

The Scotus leak has had little effect on which party Americans desire to rule Congress.

The leak of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s draft majority opinion, which lays the groundwork for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, has done little to alter which party Americans intend to vote for in November.

According to the results of an NBC News survey released Sunday, 46 percent of Americans prefer that Republicans seize control of Congress following the midterm elections, tied with those who want Democrats to remain in power.

The survey comes as the debate has shifted to how the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade would affect this year’s elections, with many Democrats hoping that the issue will drive more of their supporters to the polls.

However, the NBC News poll’s party preference percentage has stayed practically steady since last August, when 46 percent of respondents expressed a preference for Republicans vs 47 percent who preferred Democrats in charge. Similar numbers were seen in a March survey, with 46 percent preferring Republicans to 44 percent preferring Democrats. The two-point Democratic advantage in May was within the poll’s 3.10 percent margin of error.

However, the survey found increasing excitement among Democratic voters, with those who had a “strong degree of interest” in the November election climbing from 50% in March to 61 percent in the latest poll, a likely indicator that the leaked ruling is boosting the party’s zeal. Republicans experienced a tiny increase in excitement, with 69 percent reporting a strong degree of interest in the current survey, up from 67 percent in March.

Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, a Democratic pollster who co-conducted the poll with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies, stated that Democratic excitement is on the upswing as a result of the leaked verdict.
