Britain says Russia has lost a third of its forces in Ukraine

LONDON – Russia has likely lost a third of its ground personnel in Ukraine, and its Donbas offensive has “lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule,” according to British military intelligence.

“Despite small-scale initial successes, Russia has failed to secure considerable territory gains over the past month while maintaining consistently high levels of attrition,” the British military ministry tweeted.

“Russia has already lost roughly a third of the ground combat force it committed in February.”

Russia’s rate of advance is unlikely to rise considerably in the next 30 days, according to the report.

Since Russia’s invasion on February 24, Ukraine’s military has forced Russian leaders to abort an attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, before making swift victories in the northeast and pushing them out of Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city.

Though Ukraine’s military claimed on Sunday that Russian forces were advancing elsewhere in the Donbas region, the major theatre of battle for the past month, a Ukrainian counteroffensive has been underway near the Russian-held town of Izium.
