Sialkot ground not sacred place, says Christian leader

FAISALABAD: Contrary to claims of a leader of his community in Sialkot, a Christian leader hailing from Faisalabad, Huqooq Gul Masih on Monday said the ground where the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) had announced to hold a public gathering was not a sacred place or part of church.

In a statement in response to some Christian leaders, who allegedly belong to the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), Huqooq Gul said it was saddening that some friends were using religious card in politics. Politics should not be mixed with religious affairs as it could lead to anarchy, he said adding that such anarchy-mongers should be rejected.

He said the PML-N was using the religious card and the Christian community should not get embroiled in it.

The Christian leader said the same ground had been used for marriage ceremonies and cricket game.

“A conspiracy is being hatched to make the Christian community and Muslims fight with each other. The Christian community should frustrate such conspiracy,” he said.

Earlier, Federal Minister for Aviation & Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique said that PTI’s attempt to hold a public gathering in a church’s ground in Sialkot against the will of the Christian community was a despicable attempt to suppress minorities.

The minister wrote on Twitter that the administration was ready to accommodate the PTI rally but using someone’s private property without their consent was bullying, not democracy.

Ahead of the PTI meeting in Sialkot, the administration booked several party leaders including Usman Dar early today.

The PTI activists and leaders were apprehended for choosing CTI Ground which, according to the administration, is a private property owned by the minority community.
