China withdraws as host of 2023 Asian Cup

China announced its withdrawal as host of the 2023 Asian Cup on Saturday.

This was the latest renunciation of the country’s sporting obligations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June and July of next year, the 24-nation tournament was set to take place in ten cities.

The majority of the venues were brand new.

China’s absence may allow Qatar or Saudi Arabia to step up as hosts.

India and Iran have also expressed interest in competing in the 2027 edition, with a decision due early next year.

The Asian Football Confederation praised Chinese soccer officials.

As, “this is very difficult but necessary decision in the collective interests of the AFC Asian Cup.”

Qatar has built stadiums in preparation for the 2022 World Cup, which will begin in November.

Due to the high heat of Qatari summers, a June 2023 start for the Asian Cup may be unlikely, making early 2024 a better alternative.

The Asian Cup is held every four years in January and February.

The tournament was held in January in Qatar (2011) and Australia (2015), with the 2019 edition taking place in the United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1.

The 2022 Asian Games were supposed to be held in Hangzhou in September, however they were postponed, along with practically all international sporting events in China.
