One defendant in an Oklahoma love triangle murder has pled guilty to the savage slaying of a woman, while the other is awaiting trial.
Nicholas Johnson and Brinlee Denison are both charged in the killing of Sarah Maguire of Tulsa, who was battered to death with a crowbar in January.
According to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office, Johnson surrendered his right to a jury trial and pled guilty to murder. Denison’s lawsuit is proceeding. According to the DA’s office, a judge granted prosecutors a 30-day delay on Thursday to determine whether the case should be sent back to a preliminary hearing.
According to court filings, Johnson and Denison acknowledged hitting Maguire with a crowbar, taking her cash and credit cards, and driving her vehicle to another state.
Authorities claim they had intercourse in Maguire’s bed after the killing. According to a police affidavit, Johnson reportedly told officers that “he could still hear the victim in the living room battling to survive as he was having sex with Denison in the bedroom.”
According to the complaint, Johnson also told authorities that Denison utilized equipment from Maguire to move money from the victim’s bank account to another account set up for the suspects.
Prosecutors have not determined whether Denison will face the death sentence, but they have stated that it is a possibility.
“This is the sort of case we’d look at, and I’d gather my death sentence review committee to go through it and make a decision. We do not seek the death penalty in every case we submit, but I want to make sure we’re going by the statistics.” Steve Kunzweiler, District Attorney for Tulsa County
Johnson’s sentencing is scheduled for July 21. He risks life in prison without the possibility of release. Denison will appear in court again on June 13th.
