President Biden, King Abdullah II discussed the unrest in the West Bank

US President Joe Biden and Jordan’s King Abdullah II met on Friday to explore measures to “urgently address” the surge in violence between Israel and the West Bank.

Since late March, the region has been gripped by a wave of violent violence, with Israeli security forces and Palestinians often battling.

“The leaders consulted on recent events in the region and discussed urgent mechanisms to stem violence, calm rhetoric, and reduce tensions,” the White House said in a statement.

Tensions remain high, with at least 18 people dead in a spate of assaults since March 22. According to the counts, 31 Palestinians and three Israeli Arabs perished within the same time period.

According to a White House statement, the two presidents reaffirmed the US-Jordan friendship as close and durable.

“Jordan is a critical ally and force for stability in the Middle East, and the President confirmed unwavering US support for Jordan and His Majesty’s leadership,” it added.

During the meetings, Biden reiterated his strong support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue and emphasized the need of maintaining the historic status quo at the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount.

Jordan’s critical position as the guardian of Muslim sacred sites in Jerusalem was also highlighted by the President.

The leaders emphasized the political and economic benefits of greater regional integration in infrastructure, energy, water, and climate initiatives, with Jordan serving as an important center for such collaboration and investment.
