Finland’s prime minister said Wednesday that if the country joins NATO, it will be for the “security” of its population.

“It is for the protection of our own citizens if Finland takes this historic step,” Prime Minister Sanna Marin stated during a press conference in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. “Becoming a member of NATO will enhance the entire international community that defends our shared ideals.”
Marin earlier stated that joining NATO would expose Finland to Russian threats, including cyberattacks. The Nordic country has been a NATO member since 1994 and has an 800-mile border with Russia.
