First Russian soldier will face charges in the killing of a Ukrainian citizen, prosecutor says

Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office stated on Wednesday that the first Russian soldier will stand trial in the death of a 62-year-old man in Ukraine’s Sumy area.

He announced that Vadim Shishimarin, commander of the military unit 32010 of Moscow’s 4th Tank Kantemirov Division, had been charged.

According to the investigation, on February 28, a 21-year-old Russian killed a 62-year-old local riding a bicycle along the roadside in the village of Chupakhivka in Sumy area.

The Russian military entered the village in a stolen automobile with ruptured wheels.

They witnessed a man returning home and talking on the phone while driving.

One of the Russians instructed a sergeant to kill a civilian so that the Ukrainian army would not report them.

Prosecutors claim Shishimarin fired several shots through an open car window with a Kalashnikov rifle towards the resident’s head.

“Shishimarin is currently in custody. Prosecutors and SBU investigators have gathered enough evidence of his involvement in violating the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He faces between 10 and 15 years in prison or life in prison,” Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova stated on Facebook.
