Turkey detains at least 24 people

On Wednesday, Turkish police detained at least 24 men for claimed ties to a network accused of planning a 2016 coup attempt.

According to the state-run TRT channel, security personnel conducted simultaneous operations in the centre Konya region and the Turkish capital of Ankara.

The individuals are accused of financially supporting the Gulen organisation.

The suspects included police officers, teachers, and health care personnel, all of whom were fired.
On July 15, 2016, the Turkish government accused the Gulen Movement of infiltrating the state bureaucracy and launching a coup.

The organisation, which mostly operates schools across the world, is a community of individuals named after Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is recognised as a spiritual leader by his followers.

Ankara accuses Fethullah Gulen of masterminding the failed coup, which resulted in the deaths of at least 250 people.

Turkey has requested Gulen’s extradition, but Washington is hesitant to extradite the self-exiled Islamic preacher, claiming that Ankara has not produced enough proof against him.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government started a huge crackdown on people with ties to the network.
