EU ambassador talks with Iran’s nuclear negotiator

Enrique Mora, the European Union’s nuclear negotiations coordinator with Iran, met with the Islamic republic’s senior negotiator in Tehran on Wednesday, according to official media.

According to official news agency IRNA, Mora’s meeting with Iranian Deputy Vice President Ali Bagheri is “now going place.”

World powers and Iran have been at odds since mid-March, as negotiators try to revive the historic agreement that limited Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

During a year of on-again, off-again discussions in Vienna to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Mora has played a significant role as a mediator between the US and Iran (JCPOA).

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States, plus Germany, reached an agreement in 2015.

However, under then-President Donald Trump, Washington unilaterally withdrew in 2018 before introducing harsh economic penalties, leading Iran to pull away from its own promises.

Iran requested a new meeting “as soon as feasible” in late April to work on reinstating the accord.

Mora’s visit “moves the negotiations in the correct path,” according to Saeed Khatibzadeh, a spokeswoman for Iran’s foreign ministry. However, he noted that this did not imply he would arrive with a “fresh message.”
