James Hong, 93, finally receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In a flurry of drums, cymbals, and Chinese lion dancers, James Hong, the omnipresent veteran character actor who found a champion in “Lost” star Daniel Dae Kim, collected his fan-funded plaque on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

“I’ve arrived!” “I’m alive!” said the vivacious 93-year-old as he took the 2,723rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which runs between Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the TCL Chinese Theater. Hong is also the oldest individual to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He gave his address after joking and improvising around the speeches of those who introduced him, including Kim, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, the latter of whom presented him with an ornate, hand-lettered proclamation from the City of Los Angeles.

The lion dancers and musicians trod on Hong’s remarks a little, but that didn’t stop the actor from rushing over to the dance and adding a few conventional and atypical dance movements among the drums and cymbals himself. Hong then called friends and presenters over to dance with him, appearing to relish his time in the brilliant Los Angeles sunshine.

Kim said, “Though that number is entirely too low,” added, “it does underscore the fact that we need to celebrate every single one of us who has been fortunate enough to be recognized, and that includes the other three AAPI [performers] who are being inducted this year. So let’s give it up for Ming-Na Wen, Jason Momoa and (Black Eyed Peas founding member) apl.de.ap.”

The actor then joked about Hong’s tendency of emailing in all capitals, stating that it was difficult not to feel like he was shouting at you even when he was saying the kindest things. But he insisted that Hong hear his next remarks in all capitals, bolded and italicised for good measure.

“YOU ARE TRULY DESERVING OF THE HONOR YOU ARE ABOUT TO RECEIVE,” Kim said calmly, “AND YOU MAKE US ALL SO VERY, VERY PROUD.”

“I want to give a shout-out to DDK for your incredible advocacy on behalf of James Hong,” Curtis said earlier in the ceremony when she took the stage to help introduce Hong,” added, “He’s a passionate performer. He’s a hilarious presence on set. … But I also think we share a commitment to ambition, to hustle and flow.”

Also, Curtis said, “It’s about f— time that we are here honoring James Hong with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
