China’s zero-Covid policy is unsustainable says WHO’s director-general

“We don’t believe it is sustainable, given the virus’s current behavior and what we expect in the future,” Tedros said in a press conference on Tuesday, adding that a “change would be very significant.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, has urged China to reconsider its “zero-Covid” strategy, saying it no longer makes sense as the omicron version spreads among populations and the country’s economy suffers.

“We don’t believe it is sustainable, given the virus’s current behavior and what we expect in the future,” Tedros said in a press conference on Tuesday, adding that a “change would be very significant.”

Tedros’ remarks are an uncommon example of the WHO director-general criticizing a member state’s domestic Covid regulations. He was chastised early in the pandemic for being overly subservient to China, where the virus initially appeared.

President Xi Jinping has remained committed to China’s strong Covid plan, strengthening pandemic restrictions in Shanghai and launching a mass testing sweep in Beijing. Despite rising economic costs and as much of the rest of the globe opens up, officials are pursuing the elusive aim of eliminating Covid-19 instances in the community.
