At least 7,061 civilians have been killed or injured in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in late February; according to a UN official speaking at a news conference Tuesday.

Matilda Bogner

According to Matilda Bogner, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine “real figures are greater and we are striving to corroborate every single occurrence.”

Other reported crimes against civilians, according to Bogner, include rape, forced nudity, and threats of sexual violence; with women and minors being the most commonly targeted.

Many of the murders and allegations, she said, might be considered war crimes; and “such killings could potentially be in violation of international human rights law.”
