Clément Beaune, the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, says the European Union might reach an agreement on a Russian oil embargo “within a week.” Hungary is now blocking the embargo. Beaune also confirmed a phone call between French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday, according to Sud Ouest.
“I believe we can get an agreement in a week; we’re working very hard on it,” Beaune remarked.
“We need to move quickly, and I can assure you that the sixth package of European sanctions will be quite tough, and we will gradually, on schedule, abandon Russian oil, as well as Russian hydrocarbons in general,” he stated.
As previously reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was briefed on Hungary’s position on EU sanctions and energy security during a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on May 9, and Hungary expressed its intention to strengthen cooperation with regional partners in oil infrastructure development.
